The Mayor has unveiled a $1.6 million emergency plan to install ‘panic buttons’ in 500 bodegas throughout the city. The devices, dubbed “SilentShield,” will be link to NYPD precincts in an effort to combat a troubling rise in attacks on workers and customers alike.

"Bodegas are part of the heart and soul of New York City," Mayor Adams stated during a press conference at Pamela Green Deli in the Bronx. "This program will bring peace of mind to our bodega owners, while protecting the working-class New Yorkers who work and frequent bodegas."

The SilentShield devices, when activated, will connect directly to the NYPD's central command, bypassing traditional 911 dispatchers to expedite emergency responses. Additionally, the system will grant officers real-time access to the store's surveillance cameras, providing immediate situational awareness during critical incidents

Fernando Mateo, spokesperson for the United Bodegas of America (UBA), praised the initiative.

"For too long, bodega workers have suffered in silence, while help was out of reach,” Mateo said. “SilentShields will give our workers a lifeline directly to the NYPD.”

The push for panic buttons gained momentum after the tragic 2018 murder of 15-year-old Lesandro "Junior" Guzman-Feliz, who was attacked after seeking refuge in a Bronx bodega.

In response, former Bronx City Councilman Mark Gjonaj introduced legislation proposing the installation of panic buttons in bodegas. At the state level, the "Safe Havens for Endangered Children" law, nicknamed "Junior’s Law," was introduced to provide grants for panic buttons and surveillance equipment in small businesses .

United Bodegas of America (UBA) has spent years lobbying for action. In April 2025, after two deadly incidents, one involving a worker fatally stabbed during a robbery in Queens, the group ramped up pressure.

“The time for discussion is over,” UBA President Radhames Rodriguez said in April. “Every bodega must have a panic button, and the NYPD must treat these alerts like the life-or-death emergencies they are"

Not all are convinced by the mayor’s sudden push.

In a sharply worded op-ed, former state official David Catalfamo dismissed the initiative as performative politics, writing:

"We've gone from crime prevention to performance art. There's no replacing the hard work of public safety with a Life Alert.”

Catalfamo and others argue that while the technology might provide short-term reassurance, it diverts attention from long-term solutions to urban violence, such as better police deployment, community investment, and mental health support.

The rollout of SilentShields is expected in phases starting this summer, beginning in neighborhoods with documented spikes in violent crimes against small businesses. Bodega workers and community members alike hope that these measures will provide a much-needed sense of security and deter future acts of violence.

On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Dale E. Ho formally dismissed the federal indictment against Adams with prejudice, meaning the charges cannot be brought again. The decision came after the Department of Justice (DOJ), under the Trump administration, requested to drop the case without prejudice, citing the need for the Mayor’s cooperation on immigration enforcement. 

Judge Ho pushed back on that rationale, warning that the government’s explanation raised “serious concerns.”

“Everything about the government’s explanation for why it seeks dismissal here smacks of a bargain,” Ho stated in a 78-page opinion. “Dismissal of the indictment in exchange for immigration policy concessions.”

The judge concluded that allowing the case to be dismissed while leaving the door open to refile later would be unfair and politically problematic.

The federal investigation into Adams began in 2023, when the FBI launched a probe into foreign fundraising in his 2021 mayoral campaign. Prosecutors alleged that Adams accepted illegal donations from individuals connected to the Turkish government, and that he used his influence to fast-track the opening of a new Turkish consulate in Manhattan.

In November 2023, the FBI seized Adams’ personal devices and searched the home of his campaign’s chief fundraiser, Brianna Suggs. Adams maintained throughout the investigation that he had done nothing wrong.

When the charges were announced in late 2024, it was the first time a sitting mayor of New York City had faced a federal corruption indictment. In February 2025, the department filed a motion to dismiss the charges, citing the need for Adams to remain in office to assist with federal immigration enforcement. The move reportedly caused friction within the Justice Department, and at least six prosecutors in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan resigned in protest.

In his ruling, Judge Ho wrote that the court had “little choice” but to dismiss the case once prosecutors declined to go forward, but added that “the interests of justice” required the case to be dismissed with prejudice.

“The case against Eric Adams should never have been brought in the first place,” said Alex Spiro, Adams’ defense attorney. “Finally, today, that case is gone forever.”

While the legal case is over, the political fallout continues.

Last week, Adams announced he will seek re-election as an independent, not as a Democrat. The decision comes as he faces rising disapproval among Democratic voters and mounting challenges from progressive opponents. 

According to a March poll from NBC New York, Adams’ approval rating dropped below 30 percent during the investigation. With several prominent Democrats expected to run in the June primary, Adams’ decision to skip it and go directly to the general election marks a dramatic shift in strategy.

“I have always put New York’s people before politics and party and I always will,” said ​​Adams in a video message launching his new campaign. “I am running for mayor in the general election because our city needs independent leadership that understands working people.”

Though Adams has escaped a trial, the damage to public trust is far from repaired. The administration suffered multiple high-profile resignations during the probe and many city agencies were essentially paralyzed under the weight of uncertainty.

“I don’t know what to believe anymore,” said Maria De La Cruz, a Bushwick resident. “The whole thing feels dirty, like power protecting power.”

Other New Yorkers are ready to move on from this fiasco.

“He’s done more for public safety than most,” said Jamal Carter, a Bed-Stuy resident. “If the courts say he’s clear, let the man govern.”

The precedent set by this case raises serious questions about the independence of justice, the fragility of democratic norms, and whether accountability is still possible in America’s largest city.

As Adams barrels toward a re-election fight with no party, no safety net, and a bruised reputation, one thing is almost certain: New York voters will have the final say.

The decision has reignited debate over New York’s discovery laws, with some arguing they are necessary for fairness and transparency in the criminal justice system and others believing they cause harm to victims and the public by turning the courts into a revolving door for criminals.

With public fears over crime still high and court backlogs growing, Governor Hochul and prosecutors are pushing for urgent changes. Public defenders and reform advocates are fighting back, however, insisting that eroding these laws could bring back the days of wrongful convictions and secretive prosecutions.

What is New York’s Discovery Law?

Before 2020, New York actually had one of the most restrictive ‘discovery’ systems in the country. Under the past “blindfold law,” prosecutors were able to withhold most evidence until just before trial, sometimes making it difficult for defendants to make informed decisions on plea deals or preparing a strategy for trial.

That changed with the 2019 criminal justice reform, also known as Kalief’s Law. The law was named after Kalief Browder, a Bronx teenager who spent three years in jail without trial over a stolen backpack charge before the case was eventually dismissed.

The law now requires prosecutors to turn over most evidence within 35 days of arraignment (or 20 days if the defendant is in custody). This includes police reports, witness statements, body-camera footage, and police officer disciplinary records.

“For decades, prosecutors would withhold evidence in a criminal case until the day of trial or never share it at all. This led to wrongful convictions, coerced plea agreements, prolonged pretrial detention, and devastating harm to individuals, families, and entire communities,” said the coalition Brooklyn Defenders in a statement.

Balancing Fairness and Case Dismissals

While defense attorneys emphasize that the new law ensures a fair trial, some prosecutors argue that the tight deadlines and mandatory dismissals for non-compliance are having disturbing consequences.

In Manhattan, the rate of dismissed criminal cases increased from 28% in 2019 to around 50% by 2023.

Advocacy groups for domestic and sexual violence survivors have voiced alarm at the number of cases dismissed for mere technicalities, pointing out that when a case is thrown out, orders of protection lapse and abusers may walk free, leaving victims vulnerable.

District Attorney offices and police departments have struggled administratively to meet the law’s requirements. The need to gather every conceivable piece of material related to a case within a month or so has, unsurprisingly, led to significant logistical challenges.

"Domestic violence survivors are being denied justice and much-needed orders of protection by flawed discovery laws," said Manhattan District Attorney, Alvin Bragg, regarding the recently dismissed domestic violence case.

Discover Law Reform Proposals

In response to growing concerns, Governor Hochul has proposed adjustments to the discovery law as part her 2025 Executive Budget, these include:

• Granting judges more discretion so that cases are not automatically dismissed for minor discovery violations.

• Extending deadlines for prosecutors in cases involving large volumes of evidence.

• Clarifying what must be disclosed to ensure that only relevant evidence is required

“My common sense proposal to streamline New York's discovery laws will close fatal loopholes that have delayed trials and led to cases being thrown out on minor technicalities,” ​said Governor Hochul.

Prosecutors and law enforcement officials support these adjustments, arguing they would help prevent dismissals based on procedural technicalities. Public defenders and reform advocates remain cautious that these changes could erode protections meant to ensure defendants receive a fair trial.

With crime an ever-pressing issue for New Yorkers, the battle over discovery laws is steadily heating up. Lawmakers will have to decide on whether the current discovery laws are worth fighting to preserve or if it’s time to amend them altogether.

When a red suitcase was discovered abandoned near the Bronx-Yonkers border on March 7, 2025, New York woke up to yet another horror story. Inside lay the lifeless body of 26-year-old Pamela Alcántara, a woman from the Bronx who recently fled from an abusive relationship, only to be brutally killed and discarded.

Her 46-year-old ex-boyfriend allegedly ambushed her as she was preparing to move out, strangled her, and then crammed her body into a suitcase before disposing of her body in a suitcase and tossing it on the side of Palmer road.

Juliet Kashidas-Singh, 64

With an electrical cord found around her neck, 64-year-old Juliet Kashidas-Singh was found dead on the front stoop of her Ozone Park, Queens home on February 27, 2025. Police quickly arrested one of her former male employees and charged him with murder.

Investigators determined that the alleged perpetrator attacked her in a dispute over $300 of back pay. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide caused by strangulation and beating.​ The case drew outrage in the neighborhood, as the victim was an older woman well-liked in the community​.

Celina Ramos, 32

On February 11, 2025, a young woman was heard screaming for her life on a Bushwick, Brooklyn sidewalk until gunshots silenced her forever. Celina Ramos was shot and killed by her 41-year-old boyfriend before he turned the gun on himself in an alleged case of murder-suicide.

Neighbors reported hearing the woman screaming in the early morning hours before multiple gunshots rang out. The couple had reportedly only been dating a few months, underscoring the lethal risk present even in short-term relationships and how domestic violence disputes can erupt in public spaces.

One month. Three women. Three horrifyingly personal acts of violence. Each one a devastating reminder of the deadly cost of misogyny and domestic abuse in New York City.

Yet these three incidents are not isolated cases. They are part of a larger and broader crisis.

Violence Against Women in New York City

New York City faces a high volume of domestic violence incidents. In 2022 alone, nearly 120,000 domestic violence incidents were reported to the New York Police Department (NYPD), an alarming increase from previous years. Police respond to an average of 600 domestic violence calls every single day in New York, among countless other cases that go unreported.

Since 2020, domestic violence has accounted for over 27,000 felony assaults, nearly 2,000 reported rapes, and roughly 190 murders across the five boroughs. In 2022 specifically, NYC witnessed an uptick in intimate partner murders: 31 intimate partner homicides occurred in 2022 (up 29% from 24 in 2021)​. Out of those 31 cases, 26 victims were female and 5 were male.

There were 854 domestic violence-related homicides, between 2010 and 2022, making up nearly 17% of all murders citywide.

From New York City to the Nation

Femicide is by no means unique to New York but part of a nationwide epidemic of violence against women.

Nationally, one woman is murdered every six hours in the United States, often after years of escalating abuse. An estimated 55% of all women murdered in the U.S. are killed by a current or former intimate male partner.

The most dangerous time for a woman in an abusive relationship is when trying to leave, as exemplified in the cases of Pamela Alcántara and Celina Ramos.

While domestic violence remains the primary cause of femicide, a new and terrifying trend of misogynistic extremism is emerging.

Law enforcement and terrorism experts have noted the overlap between anti-woman hatred and mass violence. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) now tracks gender-motivated killings in its crime statistics and considers violent misogyny as a form of hate that can lead to terrorism​. Additionally, in 2009, U.S. federal hate crime law was expanded to include gender as a protected category​.

A System Struggling and the Fight for Women’s Safety

The 1994 Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was a landmark law which provided federal resources for investigating and prosecuting domestic violence and sexual assault, funded shelters and victim services, and encouraged coordinated community responses for both female and male victims of domestic violence.

Yet, domestic abusers in many states still have access to firearms while the presence of a gun in a domestic violence dispute increases the likelihood of murder by 500%. Orders of protection exist, but many women are murdered immediately after filing for one. Cases of domestic violence soared during pandemic lockdowns and homicide is the leading cause of death for pregnant women in the U.S.

Women have refused to go down without a fight.

From the Battered Women’s Movement of the 1970s to today’s advocacy groups, women have been on the front lines, demanding change. Organizations like Safe Horizon, Sanctuary for Families, and the NYC Anti-Violence Project are providing shelter, legal support, and crisis intervention for survivors.

New York City has taken steps in the right direction, but evidently it’s not enough. Women are still being killed.

On both local and national levels, activists are pushing for:

• Stronger gun restrictions for domestic abusers

• More funding for domestic violence shelters and victim services

• Greater legal protections for stalking and harassment victims

• More training for police to handle gender-based violence

The brutal murders of Pamela Alcántara, Juliet Kashidas-Singh, and Celina Ramos are not just tragedies; they are warnings. Warnings that New York City, despite its reputation for progress, is failing to protect women from the people they should arguably feel the safest with.

Women should not have to live in fear.

New York City, and indeed the United States, must do better.

Simultaneously, City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams is signaling a potential bid, having recently filed paperwork to establish a campaign committee named "Adrienne for the People."

"We currently have chaos and diminished trust in the other side of City Hall,” said Adrienne Adams in a recent interview with Gothamist. “That's why I'm seriously considering a campaign to become the first woman mayor of New York City."

The entrance of the former Governor and the looming candidacy of the City Council Speaker have fundamentally transformed the trajectory of the 2025 New York City mayoral race. Their presence introduces a volatile mix of political realignment and heightened scrutiny of Mayor Eric Adams' record.

For current Mayor Eric Adams, this new political landscape represents a formidable challenge. Heading into the race, he was already grappling with declining approval ratings due to concerns over corruption allegations and increasing alliance with the White House.

Cuomo’s entry presents an immediate threat from a fellow moderate Democrat with a far more established political legacy. While Adrienne Adams’ potential run could consolidate progressive support.

For New Yorkers, this new electoral dynamic presents a complex choice. The race is no longer a referendum on Eric Adams’ tenure but about who should represent New York City and competing visions for its future.

• Moderate and conservative-leaning Democrats who supported Eric Adams in 2021, primarily on public safety concerns, now have an alternative in Cuomo. His gubernatorial experience and tough-on-crime messaging could appeal to voters who feel Eric Adams has not been effective enough in tackling crime and city mismanagement.

• Progressive and reformist voters who have been critical of Eric Adams’ approach to policing, budget cuts, and social services may now see Adrienne Adams as a viable alternative. If she formally enters, she could emerge as the progressive standard-bearer, further fragmenting the field.

• Undecided and swing voters may find themselves caught between dissatisfaction with the current administration and skepticism about Cuomo’s past controversies. Adrienne Adams could offer an entirely different pathway for governance, but her level of citywide recognition and approval remains uncertain.

One of the biggest takeaways from these developments is that New York’s Democratic electorate is far from united. The presence of Cuomo, Eric Adams, and potentially Adrienne Adams could create a three-way split, leading to an unpredictable primary outcome.

Ranked-choice voting, which played a crucial role in Adams’ initial victory, adds another layer of unpredictability, forcing candidates to appeal beyond their core base if they want to remain competitive.

As the high-stakes electoral battle unfolds, the interactions between these candidates is sure to be closely scrutinized by voters, who will take into account each’s candidates track record and potential ability to address the city's ongoing challenges and political attacks.

Chanting “Adams must go!” and holding various signs accusing him of betraying the city’s diverse communities, the protesters called on Governor Hochul to take swift action and remove Adams from office.

The anti-Adams demonstrations were fueled by mounting allegations that the Mayor has been coordinating with the Trump administration to roll back protections for undocumented New Yorkers in exchange for political favors, such as the suspension of corruption charges against the Mayor by Department of Justice (DOJ).

A recent investigation by The Guardian exposed direct involvement of Adams in discussions with federal officials, including his alleged role in facilitating the transfer of detained migrants from New York City shelters to federal custody, a move that critics say amounts to a mass deportation pipeline.

“He sold New York City to President Trump,” said James Inniss, Public Safety Organizer for New York Communities for Change. “He didn’t just sell immigrant communities out. Everybody is at threat with him.”

Advocacy groups like Make the Road New York and the New York Immigration Coalition stood shoulder-to-shoulder with outraged city residents, activists, and some elected officials in denouncing the Adams administration.

“This is not the first time I called for the resignation of Mayor Adams,” said Alexa Avilés, Council member representing Brooklyn’s 38th district. “The facts are clearly presented that the Mayor is compromised.”

Speakers at the event also called on Governor Hochul to invoke her executive authority to remove Adams, arguing that his actions are a direct threat to the safety and autonomy of the city.

Governor Hochul has not yet committed to removing Mayor Adams from office, citing concerns over potential “disruption and chaos” and the importance of respecting the democratic process.

Instead of full removal, the Governor introduced legislative proposals aimed at increasing oversight of the Mayor’s office.

These proposals include:

• Appointment of a new position, Deputy Inspector General, to monitor New York City’s operations.

• Allocating additional resources to the state comptroller to scrutinize city finances more effectively.

• Granting certain city officials the authority to initiate legal actions against the federal government without requiring approval from City Hall.

Despite the growing pressure, Mayor Adams has remained defiant in calls to resign and suspend his re-election campaign.

“Isn’t our democracy based on the people we elect?” asked Adams during a Black History Month event at Gracie Mansion, before Thursday’s protests. “Why are we trying to disrupt and take the power away from the people of this city who elected me to be mayor?”

The demonstrations at Foley Square remained peaceful, though some clashes broke out when police attempted to disperse protesters blocking intersections towards the end of the rally.

“If Hochul won’t act, we will make sure this city never forgets what Eric Adams has done,” said protester Elena Rodriguez. “This is just the beginning.”

As investigations into Adams’ dealings with the Trump administration continue to unfold, the battle for city leadership is likely far from over. Protests around New York City, in their calls for accountability, show no signs of slowing down.

Washington has moved steadfast to dismantle the city’s pro-immigrant protections, end its congestion pricing program, and pull back millions in federal aid.

Several city and state officials say these actions are politically motivated punishment to reassert control over its most defiant urban opponent.

“This is an attack on our sovereign identity, our independence from Washington,” said Governor Kathy Hochul, reacting to the administration’s abrupt move to end congestion pricing. “We are not subservient to a king or anyone else out of Washington.”

Perhaps no battle had been as aggressive, or as personal, as Trump’s assault on New York’s pro-immigrant laws.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) recently sued the state to overturn its Green Light Law, which allows undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses and restricts federal access to state motor vehicle records.

Recently appointed Attorney General, Pam Bondi, made it clear that the administration sees New York as the ultimate test case for its broader immigration crackdown.

“New York has chosen to prioritize illegal aliens over American citizens,” said Bondi in announcing the lawsuit. “It stops. It stops today.”

New York Attorney General Letitia James fired back, calling the lawsuit an unconstitutional overreach and vowing to fight it in court.

“Our state laws, including the Green Light Law, protect the rights of all New Yorkers and keep our communities safe,” said James in a statement. “I am prepared to defend our laws, just as I always have.”

The immigration battle not being enough, the Trump administration has also torpedoed New York City’s congestion pricing program, a major initiative aimed at reducing traffic and funding public transit.

The plan, which had launched in early January, charged drivers entering Manhattan’s central business district. It was a measure designed to cut gridlock, curb pollution, and generate $15 billion for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

On February 8, Department of Transportation Secretary, Sean Duffy, revoked the program’s federal approval, effectively shutting it down overnight.

“New York State’s congestion pricing plan is a slap in the face to working-class Americans and small business owners,” said Duffy. “The toll program leaves drivers without any free highway alternative and takes more money from working people to pay for a transit system and not highways.”

The decision infuriated city and state officials, who accused Washington of killing the program purely to score political points.

“The federal government cannot unilaterally terminate a program once it’s begun,” said MTA Chairman Janno Lieber, whose agency is now scrambling to recover billions in lost funding.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has immediately filed a lawsuit to challenge the administration’s action, aiming to keep the congestion pricing program operational during the legal proceedings.

Beyond policy disputes, Trump’s cabinet has implemented measures directly impacting New York City’s economy.

The administration’s new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, has already fired thousands of federal employees, including many who are New York City residents.

Additionally, the agency pulled $80.5 million in FEMA funds that had already been approved for migrant housing and emergency relief.

With lawsuits and tensions escalating, New York City is preparing for a full-on legal and political war against Washington’s overreach.

Attorney General Letitia James, Governor Kathy Hochul, and other city officials have all vowed to challenge Washington at every turn, defying Washington’s agenda.

With the White House determined to exert federal control over the city and state, New York’s leadership seems equally determined to resist. Just a month into the new administration the battle for New York character and future is just beginning.

Separated by the Hudson River, residents from both states came together with clear visions of their future.

Their mission on Monday?

To send a deafening message to President Donald Trump, his billionaire adviser Elon Musk, and all their sycophants: We Will Not Be Blamed or Erased.

At the forefront of these demonstrations were powerhouse activist groups including Rally Forward, a New York-based civic engagement organization, the People’s Organization for Progress (POP), a Newark-based grassroots political movement, and the Newark branch of the NAACP. Their unified front underscored a growing regional resistance to an administration they see as not just corrupt but active in dismantling democracy.

“We are not here for just one day of protest. We came here today to build a movement,” said chairman of POP, Lawrence Hamm, as a crowd roared in agreement at the U.S. Capitol. “We are here to save democracy.”

No Kings on Presidents' Day

The protest was part of the nationwide “No Kings on Presidents' Day” movement, which erupted in over 50 cities across the country. But in D.C., the combined force of New York and New Jersey activists made their presence impossible to ignore.

Unlike previous protests divided by a unique cause such as labor, racial justice, or climate change, this one brought together a diverse coalition of activists, all focused on stopping what they see as an authoritarian takeover.

The administration’s recent moves including mass deportation efforts, elimination of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, proposal of deep cuts to federal agencies, and positioning of Elon Musk as an unelected power broker, have enraged residents of both states.

“No one voted for Elon Musk,” said Nowshadur, student at City College of New York, in reference to Musk’s continued benefits from government contracts while attempting to cut federal aid programs like FEMA and USAID. “I do not remember seeing his name on the ballot sheet. Do you?”

Sanctuaries of Strength

The organizers visited several local churches that had opened their doors on short-notice to provide space for reflection, strategy, and community building, before heading to the main protest at the Capitol.

Hundreds of activists arrived at Maple Springs Baptist Church in Capitol Heights, Maryland, which has a rich history of community engagement and spiritual leadership. Under the guidance of Reverend Jerome (Sam) Tarver, the church has emphasized the importance of fellowship and unity, aligning with the protesters' mission to reject divisive rhetoric and attacks from the administration and corporate media.

“Pay attention, stay engaged, and stay connected," offered Rev. Tarver as three guiding principles to activist, urging them to remain vigilant in the face of political corruption, to actively challenge policies that threaten democracy, and to build lasting alliances in response to divide-and-conquer tactics.

“This is our country. We need to fight for it,” said Concerto, student at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, emphasizing collective responsibility of the nation’s future and those who will inhabit it. “It doesn’t matter if we’re not going to be here 50, 60, 70 years from now.”

Immediately following, organizers gathered at the Metropolitan AME Church, renowned as the "National Cathedral of African Methodism." Throughout its history, the church has been a beacon for civil rights activism and spiritual fortitude.

“What we’re seeing for 30 days is a foretaste of four years,” said Dr. Barbara Williams-Skinner during the gathering and press conference at Metropolitan AME Church. “This is already telling us that if we don’t stop it at 30 days, we won’t have a country. We won’t have a democracy.”

The directive, issued by Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, cited concerns that the indictment was interfering with the Mayor’s ability to manage operations in the city, including immigration enforcement and crime prevention.

Adams, who has long denied any wrongdoing, immediately seized on the news as vindication.

"I thank the Justice Department for its honesty. Now, we can put this cruel episode behind us and focus entirely on the future of our city,” said Adams publicly after learning about the dismissal of his charges. "I never broke the law, and I never will."

"I want to go back to the standards of the previous mayors who I believe subscribed to my belief," said Mayor Adams. “People who are suspected of committing serious crimes in this city should be held accountable."

This is a significant shift from New York’s long-standing policies, which only allow cooperation with ICE when an individual has been convicted of a violent or serious crime, like assault and drug trafficking.

The introduction of turnstile spikes has sparked controversy among residents and commuters. Some critics argue that the spikes may not effectively address all forms of fare evasion, such as slipping through emergency doors or ducking under turnstiles, and could pose safety hazards.

“Spikes? Really? This feels like a medieval solution to a modern problem,” said Darren Fields, a Queens resident who commutes daily into Manhattan. “People who want to get through will find another way.”

The MTA has implemented various deterrent strategies, including the installation of higher fins on turnstiles to prevent "back-cocking," a method where individuals pull back turnstiles to slip through without payment. These modifications have reportedly led to an 80% reduction in such incidents at upgraded turnstiles.

More police officers have also been deployed to subway stations over the past few years, especially high-traffic stations and areas where fare evasion was most prevalent. Governor Hochul recently announced plans to deploy even more officers to every subway train and station.

The NuHart Plastics facility operated from 1950 to 2004, producing plastic and vinyl products during its time. The factory was shut down by the state after toxic chemicals were found leaking into the nearby environment. It was officially designated a Superfund site in 2010, continuing a hazardous legacy in Greenpoint.

The soil and groundwater of the former facility remain contaminated with phthalates, chemicals linked to developmental health risks, and trichloroethylene (TCE), a known carcinogen. Although cleanup efforts are ongoing, significant concerns about residual contamination persist.

Local residents and environmental advocates are expressing alarm over the proposed school's proximity to the toxic site. They argue that the site's history of contamination poses an unacceptable risk to students and staff.

"No child should have to go to school next to a toxic waste site," stated a petition by North Brooklyn Neighbors, a nonprofit dedicated to environmental justice. “But a generation of Greenpoint children will unless an alternate location for a future school is found.”

The petition has garnered over 6,700 signatures.

The School Construction Authority insists that extensive environmental assessments have been conducted, and that no contaminants have been detected on the proposed school property.

The SCA proposed further safety measures, including installing a hydraulic barrier to prevent underground toxin migration and constructing the school without a basement to mitigate the risk of vapor intrusion.

Even with these assurances, skepticism among some residents remains.

“We want schools,” said Susan Caldwell, a long-time Greenpoint resident. “But not at the cost of our kids’ health. Greenpoint deserves better.”

Newly appointed Police Commissioner, Jessica Tisch, has announced sweeping reforms aimed at reining in the department’s financial hemorrhaging and restoring public trust.

“We have articulated clear overtime controls,” said Tisch. “It is now the responsibility of managers and executive leadership to ensure these controls are followed, and I will hold them accountable.”

The proposed reforms include:

• Monthly Overtime Caps: All NYPD bureaus will now operate under strict monthly overtime limits tailored to their responsibilities.

• Compliance Officers in Every Bureau: Dedicated officers will monitor overtime spending and ensure compliance with new policies.

• Enhanced Reporting Requirements: Bureaus must submit detailed monthly reports on overtime usage to department leadership.

• Stricter Managerial Oversight: Managers and executive leaders will be held directly accountable for overtime abuses in their units.

These reforms follow a series of high-profile scandals, including the resignation of former Chief of Department, Jeffrey Maddrey, in December. Maddrey, who was the NYPD’s highest-ranking uniformed officer, stepped down after allegations emerged that he traded overtime opportunities for sexual favors.

The scandal exposed glaring weaknesses in oversight, with Maddrey’s accuser reportedly earning over $200,000 in overtime in an administrative role.

Kaz Daughtry, deputy commissioner and former driver for Maddrey, also allegedly collected overtime despite policies prohibiting such payments.

According to an overtime report by the NYPD, spending between April and June 2024 surpassed $200 million with precincts alone accounting for more than a third of total spending.

A report from the Department of Investigation found that NYPD officers working overtime faced increased risks of misconduct and injury. The report also pointed to a breakdown in oversight during Mayor Eric Adams’ tenure, as the NYPD exceeded its overtime budget every year since 2016.

“We’re at the lowest staffing level in three decades, with an average of 234 cops quitting or retiring each month,” stated the PBA. “In some precincts, cops are losing nearly all their days off, or being brought in on mandatory OT just to cover routine patrol tours.”

The department faces an uphill battle. A separate report by the city’s Comptroller found that police overtime spending consistently outpaced budgets, suggesting deeper systemic issues.

Although Cuomo has not officially declared his candidacy, he is already stirring interest from voters, overshadowing Mayor Eric Adams and other Democratic contenders.

The former governor, who resigned in 2021 amid allegations of sexual harassment, is polling at 32% among likely Democratic voters, according to a survey commissioned by Progressives for Democracy in America and obtained by POLITICO.

His potential entry has already shifted the dynamics of the race, with many viewing him as a strong challenger to Mayor Adams, who trails far behind at just 6% support.

While Cuomo has yet to announce his candidacy, reports suggest he has begun assembling a campaign team, signaling his intent to reenter the political arena. He is expected to hire longtime associate Charlie King for his campaign, with an official announcement potentially coming as early as February.

“I know he wants to serve. He’s hearing what people are saying,” said Chris Cuomo in October 2024 when asked if his brother would run for NYC mayor. “We’ve got a long way to go. We’ll see what happens.”

Cuomo’s lead in the polls reflects both his name recognition and a public desire for experienced leadership during challenging times for the city. His potential platform is expected to highlight his gubernatorial achievements, particularly his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and infrastructure projects.

On the other hand, Mayor Adams, who is seeking a second term, faces significant hurdles. His administration is currently embroiled in federal corruption investigations, leading to his indictment on charges of bribery, fraud and conspiracy.

Adams has denied any wrongdoing and vowed to fight the charges, but the ongoing investigation has eroded his support among voters.

Adding to his challenges, the city's Campaign Finance Board recently denied his campaign millions in public matching funds, citing financial irregularities and the federal probe. This has hampered his ability to mount a robust reelection effort.

The current mayor has dismissed these early polling numbers, drawing parallels to his 2021 campaign, where initial surveys showed him trailing.

"We don't say Mayor Yang," said Adams, referencing his eventual 2021 victory over early front-runner Andrew Yang. “Polls don’t make mayors. People do.”

While Cuomo and Adams dominate the headlines, other Democratic candidates are also running for NYC mayor:

• Scott Stringer: The former city comptroller is campaigning on a platform of fiscal responsibility and progressive policies.

The devastating event is a painful reminder of the Bronx's long and disturbing history with fires, occurring just a day after the third anniversary of the tragic Twin Parks fire, which claimed 17 lives in 2022.

The Wallace Avenue fire broke out at around 1:40 a.m., originating in the "cockloft”, the concealed space between the ceiling and the roof. Within an hour the flames escalated to the highest alarm level, demanding the response of approximately 200 firefighters.

“Heavy fire destroyed all the apartments on the top floor and burnt through the roof,” said John Esposito, the FDNY’s Chief of Department. “The fire had too much headway. It was extremely dangerous for our firefighters."

Seven people sustained minor injuries, including five firefighters and two residents. One resident was treated at the scene and declined further medical assistance. The relentless inferno was finally subdued by 3 p.m., but not before burning through the roof and top-floor apartments and leaving lower levels severely damaged by water.

Displaced residents have been provided shelter and assistance at the Bennington School by NYC Emergency Management and the Red Cross of New York.

The exact cause of the Wallace Avenue fire remains under investigation.

Concerns have been raised about the building's maintenance prior to the fire, with reports suggesting the building lacked adequate heating and no fire alarms were activated during the incident.

The property, managed by Parkash Management, has previously faced scrutiny for neglect, with owner Ved Parkash once labeled the “worst landlord” in the city, collecting over 2,200 housing violations.

Decades of redlining, negligent landlords and crumbling infrastructure have created a perfect storm of fire hazards in the borough. During the 1970s alone, certain sections of the South Bronx saw up to 97% of buildings reduced to ashes or abandonment, giving the borough its rough reputation.

“Black and Puerto Rican residents were blamed for the devastation even as they battled daily to save their neighborhoods," said Vivian Vázquez Irizarry, Bronx-born director of the documentary Decade of Fire, “But it was landlords and the state who were responsible for the famous fires that ravaged the Bronx."

Though the borough has made strides since the infamous "Bronx is Burning" days of the 1970s, the scars of disinvestment, poor housing conditions and systemic neglect remain.

The Bronx still has some of the most fire-prone areas of the city due to aging homes and landlords continuing to cut corners on maintenance.

Residents who encounter unsafe living conditions, such as insufficient heat or broken fire alarms, are urged to file complaints with the city by calling 311 or visiting the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), if their concerns are not addressed directly by their landlord.

“We’ve been complaining about these issues for years,” said Bronx neighbor Ricardo Martinez. “No heat, broken smoke alarms, no response from landlords. When are they going to start listening us instead of ignoring us?”

Despite the historic challenges, the Bronx community is as resilient as ever. Relief efforts for displaced families are being organized citywide, with the Red Cross registering dozens of families for emergency services.

Volunteers have flooded the Bennington School with donations of clothing, food and supplies. Local organizations have also launched donation drives to help victims recover and rebuild.

“We’ll rebuild as we always do," said Tiffany Reyes, a Bronx resident who volunteered to help the fire survivors. “But we shouldn’t have to keep rebuilding.”

As the community grapples with this latest tragedy, many Bronx residents are left wondering how long it will take for New York City to address the structural issues that make the Bronx a tinderbox waiting to ignite.

Winner: Manhattan Drivers (Who Can Afford It)

For those who can absorb the shock, the benefits are undeniable.

According to early estimates, traffic volume in the congestion zone has dropped by 15–20%. Previously clogged streets like Broadway, Fifth Avenue and Canal Street are now flowing more freely and quietly, showing a stark contrast to the typical gridlock that once defined Manhattan.

For more affluent residents, the congestion fee barely registers as an inconvenience. Many of them have welcomed the relief from gridlock, with some reporting up to 30% shorter travel times during peak hours. The toll is just a small price to pay for quicker and less stressful travel.

Loser: Low-Income Commuters

Working-class New Yorkers with limited access to public transit are bearing the brunt of the toll.

The Congestion Relief program offers a 50% discount after the 10th trip in a calendar month for individuals earning under $50,000 annually. Many commuters argue that this measure is insufficient to alleviate the economic strain.

Critics highlight that existing public transportation options may not adequately serve all low-income commuters. Concerns about safety, reliability and accessibility of the subway and bus systems persist, making the shift from personal vehicles to public transit challenging for some individuals.

Winner: The MTA and Public Transit

Public transit ridership has surged as commuters ditch their cars to avoid the toll.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is reporting higher revenue and ridership since the toll was implemented. Subway ridership has increased by 10%, or approximately 3.2 million riders. Similarly, the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North have experienced ridership increases of 14% and 15%, respectively.

The MTA is still facing criticism for not adequately preparing for the increased demand. This influx of riders has led to overcrowded conditions, with passengers reportedly being pressed against one another and some unable to board trains due to capacity issues.

Loser: Rideshare Drivers

Rideshare drivers, many of whom are from low-income backgrounds, are experiencing compounded financial pressures.

Uber adjusted its compensation structure for drivers on trips between New Jersey and New York, citing increased operational costs due to congestion pricing. Previously, drivers received a $20 credit for these trips. This has since been reduced significantly to $16.06 during peak hours and $14.06 during off-peak hours.

In addition to reduced driver compensation, Uber has imposed a $1.50 surcharge on customers entering the congestion zone, raising concerns about potential decreases in rider demand, which could further reduce drivers’ earnings. Both Uber and Lyft have historically supported the implementation of congestion pricing.

Winner: Cyclists and Pedestrians

By reducing traffic volumes, congestion pricing could very well lead to improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

Prior to congestion pricing, there was a concerning rise in traffic-related fatalities in the city. The first half of 2024 saw the highest number of traffic deaths in nearly a decade, with 61 pedestrians and 12 cyclists killed. This was a 27% increase in pedestrian deaths compared to the same period in the previous year.

It will likely take several months of data collection and analysis to determine the actual impact of the program on traffic accidents and overall safety in New York City. Cities like London and Stockholm have experienced decreases of over 50% in traffic accidents within congestion pricing areas and surrounding regions.

Loser: Some Upper Manhattan and Outer Borough Residents

In neighborhoods outside of the congestion zone, streets have transformed into new battlegrounds.

Drivers seeking to avoid the congestion toll are leaving their vehicles just outside the fee zone, exacerbating parking shortages and igniting tensions among residents. Residents of these areas have reported extended searches for parking spots and increased tensions, including physical altercations over spaces.

Areas including Queens, the South Bronx, and parts of Brooklyn have braced for more traffic congestion and pollution as commuters circumvent the toll using local streets. Residents and officials from these regions have long argued that congestion pricing disproportionately benefits Manhattan at the expense of surrounding areas.

The rollout of congestion pricing has highlighted the deep complexities and inequalities in New York City. With billions of dollars at stake, congestion pricing has the potential to reshape the city’s future, but its success will depend on how well it balances the needs of all its residents.

In December 2024, the city experienced an 18-month low in asylum seeker entries, prompting a strategic consolidation of resources.

Among the closures is the controversial facility at 47 Hall Street in Brooklyn's Clinton Hill neighborhood, nicknamed “The Hall.” The shelter has been plagued by safety issues and reports of gang-related violence.

Despite previous hesitations to shut “The Hall” down due to limited relocation options, the city has now scheduled its closure, along with other shelters across Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, and Yonkers, by June 2025.

“Living at The Hall was difficult, it was unsafe, the food was terrible,” said Angel Urbina, former resident of The Hall, sharing his perspective on the closure. “I hope they can find more permanent housing like me.”

The city's migrant shelter population has seen a consistent 27-week decline, decreasing from a peak of over 65,000 to under 51,000 individuals. This trend is partly due to federal actions, including executive orders by the Biden-Harris administration, which have significantly reduced the rate of asylum seekers arriving in the city.

"We will continue to do everything we can to help migrants become self-sufficient,” said Mayor Adams in a statement. “While finding more opportunities to save taxpayer money and turn the page on this unprecedented humanitarian crisis."

In addition to the Clinton Hill facility, the city plans to shut down the large tent shelter at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn by January 15, 2025. This facility, which housed more than 1,800 migrants, is one of the 25 shelters slated for closure as the number of new arrivals continues to decline.

Despite the wave of closures, the city is opening a new shelter in the Bronx, intended to accommodate single men currently housed at the Randall's Island tent camp, which is also set to close.

The new Bruckner Boulevard center will house up to 2,200 individuals in a seven-story warehouse building, underscoring the city's ongoing struggle to provide shelter while managing resources efficiently.

Advocates have criticized the city's approach to sheltering and constantly moving migrants around the city.

"Instead of investing in stable, long-term housing, Adams is playing a game of shelter whack-a-mole,” said Murad Awawdeh, President and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition. “Shuffling people around without regard for schooling, family stability, or work opportunities."

They argue that the city's reliance on temporary solutions fails to address the underlying needs of migrant families.

Many have called for increased investment in permanent housing programs and expanded access to housing vouchers, such as CityFHEPS, which can help migrants establish stability and integrate into local communities.

“Shelters are not a permanent solution. As migrants continue to seek new opportunities in our city, we must create new pathways to permanent housing,” said Queens Councilmember Julia Won in a statement. “We request the Mayor provide additional resources to make sure that families are receiving access to health care, mental health services, job assistance and wraparound services.”

As the city navigates this evolving humanitarian landscape, the balance between providing necessary support to migrants and addressing community concerns remains a critical challenge for the Adams administration.
